Open Auditions for Sylvia, a comedy

Wednesday, June 5, 2024 (5:00 PM - 6:30 PM) (PDT)

Threepenny  Theater Co. is excited to announce auditions for Sylvia, by A.R. Gurney. We are seeking 3-5 adults in a variety of roles for this howlingingly funny modern comedy!

Where: The Chetco Library's Large Meeting Room, 405 Alder St, Brookings. When: June 5, 5:00-6:30pm

We are seeking actors for the following roles:

  • Greg: Middle-age, husband of Kate, owner of Sylvia. His career in finance is starting to wind down.
  • Kate:  Middle-age, wife of Greg, reluctant owner of Sylvia. Her career as a  teacher is starting to take off now that the kids are out of the house.
  • Tom: Any age, a fellow patron of the local dog park.
  • Phyllis: Middle-age or older, a long-time friend of Kate's.
  • Leslie: Any age, Greg and Kate's marriage counselor.

Be prepared to read excerpts from the script (and to act alongside a talking dog!)

Note:  If you need to arrive a little late due to work/childcare situations,  we understand! Late arrivals accepted, but please be aware that all  readings end at 6:30pm.

If you cannot make the in-person audition and would like to audition remotely, please make arrangements with director Jason Liddell no later than June 4. He can be reached on Facebook Messenger, by phone at  541-251-0640, or by email at

Synopsis:  Greg is a restless empty-nester, tired of his job in finance, looking  for meaning in his life. Sylvia is an exuberant labradoodle, astray in  Central Park, looking for a new home. When they meet, it is love at  first sight. But his wife Kate, a busy rising star in the public school system, is looking forward to some independence now that the kids are gone, and is less than thrilled by the clever and coquettish canine who slobbers, sits on her couch, and distracts Greg from their marriage.

Sylvia exerts such a charismatic pull that Kate’s friends are appalled, the  marriage counselor advocates divorce, and even Greg’s new dog-owner  friend warns him of the splintering effect a dog can have on the  relationship between husband and wife. It is only when Greg is prepared  to make the ultimate sacrifice that Kate is able to see Sylvia not as a  threat, but as a new member of her family. A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia is a  smart, silly, sophisticated, and occasionally salty comedy about  relationships, nature, and growing older.

Rehearsal/Performance  Info: Sylvia will open October 11, 2024, and run for two weekends. We strive  to cast our shows early to allow all actors time to thoroughly learn their lines, but blocking rehearsals for Sylvia will not begin until early  September. Actors are NOT expected to rehearse regularly through the  summer!
